In Hillsborough County more than 17,000 people experience homelessness each year. Over 4,000 are children that are attending our public school system, under the age of 18. When we heard these statistics, we felt that we had do something to change this terrible problem.
As the Senior Pastor of Berith Ministries International ending homelessness in Hillsborough County this is both a personal mission and a church vision. In 2003, I became homeless with my two children due to domestic violence. I made a promise that I would give back when I got back on my feet. We are tackling the biggest cause of homelessness, affordable housing. Homelessness is a community problem and it takes a community to end it. We are providing shelter, food, helping the unemployed to find jobs and helping families to become self-sufficient again. As organizations heard what we were doing, they have joined our mission to end homelessness; RealNet Property Management, Camden Living, Wendy, Inc., Big Lots and U-Haul are just a few.
Covenant House of Tampa is a Christian based transitional housing program that provides help to men, women and children who are in transition from homelessness to independence. It has been established to give individuals a fresh start in life: to give them a sense of self-worth.
